I'm male and enjoy getting massages. I typically get a 90 min full body sweedish massage. I ask for the full body and a little extra time in the shoulders (deep tissue). My first therapist I ever had was wonderful. I felt complete and relaxed with lasting effects. Her session included massaging my upper thighs, front and rear, and my buttocks. Isn't this part of a 'Full Body' massage? She has since moved on and my next visit I had to see a different therapist. My new therapist would only go halfway up my thighs and never my buttocks. I had ask for the same service. Also the pressure to my shoulders was not as good. The effects of this were short seemingly only hours later it felt as if I never had a massage. This, to me is not money well spent. I have moved on to try a new therapist elsewhere and the results were slightly better, but still not as good with the effects only lasting a day. This therapist also would not go no further than mid-thigh and that just makes me feel like it was only half done.

Now I wonder if the therapists think that I'm there for the sensual or erotic aspect of the massage. I do not want to ask the therapist why these areas were skipped so not to leave that impression. I am not interested in this at all, I'm married and get my sexual satisfaction at home. I just want to feel complete and relaxed. I deal with lot's of stress in my profession and the tension builds in my body. I used to be real modest about it and had a hard time relaxing my first time but my first therapist showed me that it was very professional and I learned how to relax. Now, I leave the session and do not feel complete. I haven't gone for another one in quite awhile and feel like I could use one now.

How do I express this without giving the wrong impression? Are there therapists that just have their own personal reservations about what areas they will not touch? I do not want to waste any more money hopping from therapist to therapist to find the one that can do it right. Is there any advice on how to approach my next visit to communicate my needs without make it seem improper?

Thanks
Woody

When i started to attend my salon i asked my specialist to do full body massage. And he asked me if i had any wishes. I answered that it was no matter for me that i had male specialist and he could be sure that nothing would embarrass me. Its important to make dialogue with people-understanding will be guaranteed.

It has been my experience that when people ask for glute work, and are very upfront about why they need it, I never feel uncomfortable performing the work in my practice. Most therapists will be able to tell if you are requesting work in a specific area for the wrong reasons.

I think this is the problem that every honest person faces while going for a complete body massage and this is true that massage therapist feel little uncomfortable while giving a full body massage but very soon they got comfortable enough to handle and manage everything. well, it is very important to talk with them so that to make them feel comfortable first so that they can understand your need better.

Thanks

Just let the Therapist know what you want, i think you need to sit with them and tell them this whole situation. I hope you will get a positive answer.

I have had client's that tell me this as well. As a therapist and also someone that suffers greatly from lower back pain I totally agree that if the glutes are not massaged you wont feel as well You in addition to that need work on your hamstrings and some leg stretches.

You should just let the therapists know want you would like they can't read your mind some men are not comfortable with this area so some therapists won't do unless asked.

It just takes a while to build confidence and trust with a therapist. I have been going to the same therapist for a few years now and we are very comfortable with a massage of the glutes and higher up on the front and back of the thighs

Hi Woody

You might like to read my response to Gracie's post about inappropriateness. It definitely seems to be something to do with the way massage therapy is taught in North America. You might want to try getting a session with someone who has been in practice for 10+ years, or indeed, a deep tissue specialist.

I have to say that I have been disappointed more than satisfied with massages I have received in this country over the past 11 years, which is a sad fact, considering that I live in a town where there are about 200 licensed therapists. The best massages I receive are generally from therapists who were trained in Europe or elsewhere in the world.

The new therapists straight out of school are cautioned against working the glutes on someone who is seeing them for the first time. The horror stories spread at school are effective. It takes time for them to become comfortable working with the glutes and "going" against what was learned in school.
Find someone more experienced and ask about their training. Someone with a deep tissue background should solve your dilemma.

Just be honest and tell them what you want if you are fairdinkum they will comply
